"The aspect of the venerable mansion has always affected me like a human countenance... It was itself like a great human heart, with a life of its own, and full of rich and sombre reminisces."

Paul Nathan Gallery

We're proud to host the largest collection of Paul Nathan artworks in the world. Nathan's unique process starts with acrylic paintings which are then photographed and composed as collage creating a whimsical and wonderful world uniquely their own.

Paul Nathan has occupied this location since the mid-1980's and through his generosity and vision as an artist Salem Arts Association enjoys presenting our galleries in this space with Paul.

NOW OPEN on Derby Street!

Our new home is at 159 Derby Street – a wonderful location and loaded with historic charm. Right next to the Salem Maritime Historic Site. Just down the street from the House of the Seven Gables. Our new neighborhood also shares popular restaurants, shops, Pickering Wharf, and nearby Blaney Pier with the Salem Ferry and cruise ship docks.

This property is owned by Attorney turned Artist Paul Nathan. Paul is a retired lawyer and working artist who had converted his former law offices, two years ago, to a gallery to show and sell his work. You can imagine the challenges of maintaining a single person gallery, so Paul was thinking about what might be next. What’s next is that Salem Arts will move into the space, taking over most of the first and second floors with Paul maintaining a room as his own gallery.

The property’s 300-year history has housed shipwrights, a prestigious paper-stamping operation, and several other businesses and tenants. We’re very proud to become the latest stewards of 159 Derby Street.

This change gives Salem Arts Association the opportunity for an exciting, vibrant, energetic renewal, putting us in wonderful shape for the future.

Paul Nathan's Message to All of You

“I purchased this building in 1987. Around 2012 I began ‘pivoting’ from lawyer to artist. It is a wonderful building. It has historic charm. It sits on the corner of an absolute gem of a public park. The Custom House, the Friendship, the wharf, pedestrians. I can go on and on.

People smile when they walk in. The building just feels good. I would like to continue enjoying it as long as I can. But there is NO REASON I cannot share that pleasure. And in walks Jim Bostick and my new friends on the board of Salem Arts Association.

I look forward and welcome you all.

So let’s get a ‘wiggle on it.’

Let’s make the building a wonderful destination.

Let’s have fun.”

- Paul Nathan
